What is AmeriCorps VISTA?

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a full-time, year-long national service program focused on fighting poverty. Instead of providing direct services, AmeriCorps VISTA members build the capacity of nonprofit organizations and public agencies so they can serve more people.

CCHSC places AmeriCorps VISTA members with nonprofit organizations and public agencies in Cherokee and neighboring counties for a one-year term. In exchange for their service, members receive a living allowance and can choose between a cash stipend or an education award when they complete their term.

Member benefits

AmeriCorps sets member benefits, and they can change. Highlights include:

  • Living allowance: a modest allowance, based on local poverty rates, paid every two weeks.
  • Health care: two options, depending on whether you already have health coverage when you start.
  • Relocation help: travel assistance and a settling-in allowance if you move more than 50 miles from home to serve.
  • Child care: a child care benefit for eligible members.
  • Non-competitive eligibility: a hiring path that can make it easier to get a federal job after your service.

See AmeriCorps' benefits page for full, current details.

Where members serve

AmeriCorps VISTA host sites have included the WRAP Tahlequah office, Cherokee County Health Services Council, the WRAP Boys and Girls Club, and the American Indian Resource Center's Camp Seven Star.
